Open SSPS to a new worksheet:
1. Click on Variables View
2. Enter the variables Student, Class, and Score
3. Click on Data View
4. Enter the numbers 1 through 20 under the variable ‘Student’
5. The first 10 student scores were for class 1, so enter a 1 under the variable ‘Class’ for the first 10 students. Now enter a 2 under ‘Class’ for students 11 through 20
6. Under ‘Score’ enter:
87 95 89 74 73 92 63 90 94 84 91 90 75 93 87 85
Okay, now that we have our data entered, let’s do a two-sample t test for a difference between the mean scores of the two classes.
1. Click ‘Analyze’
2. Click ‘Compare Means’
3. Click ‘Independent Samples t-Test
4. Since a student’s score depends on which class he or she attends, the variable ‘Score’ is the dependent variable. In the independent samples t-test box, click on score and then the top arrow to more Score into the Test Variable box.
5. Click on ‘Class’ (our independent variable) and then on the bottom arrow to put Class in the Grouping Variable box.
6. Click on ‘Define Groups’
7. Enter a 1 (for class 1) in the group 1 box
8. Enter a 2 in the group 2 box
9. Click ‘Continue’
10. Click ‘OK’
In the ouput. SPSS gives the means and standard deviations of both classes as well as your F statistic, t statistic, and a 95% confidence interval for the difference between the two means.
