Explain the importance of demonstrating that the population fits a particular model (in our case, is normally distributed) before making decisions based on that model (in our case, the standard normal curve).

If the population does not fit a particular model, then we should not use the model to make decisions, because our decisions will be erroneous if they are based on that model. Thus we need to make sure the population fits the model before using the model to make decisions.
